LED Grow Lights
By adminOne example of a small thing that an individual could do would be to use LED grow lights in an indoor garden or greenhouse instead of energy-wasting High Intensity Discharge, Metal Halide or High Pressure Sodium lamps that are traditionally used for indoor horticulture. Recent advances in LED technology have created lighting devices that use a fraction of the voltage of conventional bulbs. Over the course of device-life, LED fixtures can realize energy-cost savings up to 80 percent over older gas-discharge or fluorescent systems.
LED grow lights offer other efficiencies and advantages as well. LED systems require no heavy ballasts or bulky reflectors and shades, making them easier to mount and maintain. Nor do LED systems create excessive waste heat, reducing and in some cases eliminating the need for elaborate and energy-consuming ventilation systems. A further energy-cost saving is realized in the extreme durability of LEDs, which can last up to 100,000 hours — 12 years under normal usage conditions — eliminating up to 50 burnt-out bulbs and ballast fixtures from landfills and recycling stations.
